While waiting for Bow’s nursery graduation at Queen’s Park in Loughborough, I ended up wandering through the flower beds like an idiot, head buried in petals while other parents probably wondered what I was doing. This frame comes from an album mostly full of Bow, so it won’t be shared widely, but the colours and the bee made it worth a spot here.

What I learned: light changes everything. The flowers that day looked totally different depending on the angle and time, and it’s what pushed me into finally researching white balance (still a work in progress). Also, bees don’t appreciate having a lens shoved in their faces.

Ran a roll through the Zeiss Ikonta, built in 1938.
Focus is mostly a guess, exposure’s hit and miss, and the light leaks made themselves at home.
But nearly 90 years on, it still spat out a handful of photos that actually look like photos.
I’ll take that as a win.

Weekly Prime: one photo, one lens, every week

I’m starting a new project called Weekly Prime. Every week I’ll pick a single prime lens, go out and make one deliberate photograph, and each Wednesday I’ll share just that one photo with a short write-up of the story, settings, and what I learned.

The idea is simple: fewer choices, more focus. One lens forces me to move and compose differently, and one photo each week keeps me paying attention without turning it into a chore.

By this time next year I should have 52 photos to look back on, each tied to its own week.

I’ll share the prime photo every Wednesday on the socials. If you fancy trying it yourself, you don’t need shelves of lenses. Even your smartphone works fine if you stick to one focal length and avoid the zoom. Tag your mates if you think they’d enjoy joining in too.

Sunrise at Shambala Festival whilst on paramedic cover somewhere around 5am. The site was just starting to wind down with the sky shifting through deep blues into orange. It’s always a strange mix of quiet and anticipation at that time, with the night still lingering but the new day already pushing in.
I had the 20mm f1.8 on and warmed the shots up a couple of thousand kelvin in Lightroom, which gave the light a really gentle glow that felt true to being there. It also reminded me of one of the real frustrations of cheap VND filters. The corners softened badly again and it was enough to notice even in the best frames. Probably time I admit that no amount of post-work is going to fix what a budget filter ruins and finally invest in something decent. (Don't tell Emma)
Still, mornings like this are worth it.

Finally getting round to sharing some long overdue 35mm photos from Portugal. These were shot on my dad’s Fujica ST901, a camera that hadn’t been used in 25 years until I took it on holiday to see if it still worked.
It handled itself pretty well. Beaches, streets, tiled walls, and the little details that catch your eye when you’re away all came through on the roll. Strangely enough, my favourite shot isn’t one of the postcard views but the washed out apartment block photo. There’s something about the texture and faded look that really feels like it belongs on film.
Not a bad revival for a camera that had been sat in a cupboard for decades.

Ran a test roll of 35mm through the Voigtländer Vito B around Loughborough, covering a mix of spots including the streets, the Sock Man statue, a TVR meet, and the allotment.
Really pleased with how it turned out. The old Vito B is definitely creeping into my top 5 vintage cameras so far.
Sharp enough, colours come through nicely, and there’s that classic feel that makes even the ordinary scenes more interesting.
Street corners, statues, pub fronts, market stalls, sports cars, and runner beans all on one roll. That’s exactly why I’m enjoying these older cameras, you never quite know what the mix will be until the scans come back.

Whilst on paramedic cover at a TVR car show, I got permission from the organisers to grab a handful of shots.
In-between track sessions I caught a mix of models... a silver TVR Tuscan, blue TVR Sagaris, dark blue TVR Chimaera, red TVR Tuscan, and a classic black TVR Griffith 400. TVRs don’t do subtle.

Took the Sony out for a street shoot in Loughborough with no plan.
Ended up with an antiques market in full swing, a giant Ray-Ban ad plastered on the side of the closed Carillon Centre, and shop signs so worn out they’re barely readable.
Found churches with gravestones from the 1700s, a few “We’re Open” signs on very much closed shops, and the odd alley with more character than the high street.
Even managed to catch a selfie in a shop window from across the street.
Also squeezed in a few frames on the Voigtländer Vito B 35mm film camera. We’ll see how those turn out once they’re developed.

Took the Sony out for a wander around Attenborough Nature Reserve.
Started with a quiet, black-and-white frame of the water, then things got a bit livelier with gulls and terns mid-flight, a cormorant claiming its own private island, and even a gull hauling a crayfish out of the water. I’m not a bird watcher (Thanks Chat GPT for the species!), just practicing, but there was plenty to work with.
Also couldn’t resist a half-portrait of one of the resident English Longhorns, not your usual wildlife subject here!
A good mix of stillness, movement, and the occasional surprise when you’re in the right place at the right time.

Some days you don’t need colour to tell the story.

These were taken on our trip to Portugal using the Sony A7III and Samyang 35mm, dialled in for contrast, shadows, and shape. I was mostly shooting for light and texture, peeling paint, worn edges, narrow gaps between buildings, and the odd bit of graffiti that sneaks into nearly every frame if you look close enough.

Black and white always pulls a different mood out of a place. Not better, just different. You stop noticing the blue sky and start noticing the quiet lines.

Packed the bag, picked the lenses, grabbed the camera… left the memory card at home.

Took the DJI Osmo Action Pro 5 out on a speedboat run with Bow and my dad during our trip to Portugal.
Everything shot handheld, all via the rear screen. No EVF, no fancy setup, just press go, chuck my arm in teh air and hang on.
Despite the speed, bounce, and constant salt spray, it kept focus and held detail better than I expected.
Nice to travel light and still come back with something that feels worth keeping.

Took the camera out for a family day at the zoo while we were in Portugal. No big plan, just enjoying it and trying to really work on crisp close-ups through the fences and distractions. Bow was more interested in snacks and flamingos, I was mostly arguing with manual focus and waiting for that one sharp eye.
That said I did try mounting the Osmo Action Pro 5 on the hot shore to try recording the process..... We'll see if that ever comes to anything!

Some hits, some misses, but getting better at slowing down and actually 'seeing' what I’m shooting, not just snapping.

Portugal Graffiti - Kept noticing graffiti tucked into corners all across the Algarve. Not murals or art commissions, just the quick, messy, often angry stuff.
The kind that doesn’t ask for permission and doesn’t try too hard either.

That ACAB one caught my eye through the trees. Could’ve been any city. It was right there between sunshine and villas.
There’s something about seeing protest and frustration sprayed in warm tourist towns that makes it stand out more.
Even in the quiet bits, someone’s got something to say.

Loaded two vintage cameras with the same roll of 120, took them out for a few days, and tried to figure out which one still had some life in it.
One scratched every frame. The other burned numbers into the film.
Both taught me something.

Just a mix of whatever caught my eye between the beach, breakfast, and Bow trying to spend all her euros in one go.

There’s a bit of everything in here. Morning shadows, crooked tiles, street art, family moments, souvenir decisions, and a full-on ribbon dance I still don’t really understand.
Didn’t go with a plan. Just had the Sony on me most of the time and tried to pay attention.

Took the Fujica ST701 and a chunky 80–200mm Prinzflex out for a solo canal walk through Loughborough.
Loaded with Ilford XP2, filmed the whole thing on the Osmo Pocket 3.
Tried to frame narrowboats, bridges, graffiti and the odd swan—all while narrating to myself like a lost YouTuber in the wild.
The lens was too tight, the looks from passers-by were awkward, but some of the shots landed. XP2 continues to deliver, even when I don't.

Just got back from Portugal with the family, sun, cliffs, speedboats, and about 2,000 photos later… I’ve finally finished sorting through it all.

Mixed results this time. Some wins, some proper head-scratchers, a few near misses, and one ethical street photo that’s still playing on my mind. Also ACAB graffiti next to tropical plants, a camera malfunction that nearly gave me a breakdown, and a boat trip with Bow and my dad that I’ll never forget.

Spent the day on the ambulances at British Superbikes but grabbed the Sony A7III and 24-270mm whenever I could. Solid lens but I definitely wanted more reach when the bikes flew past. Might have to speak to the boss about that new lens.....

Funny really, in my latest blog I said I didn’t like sports photography. Maybe I do. Turns out being trackside with bikes flat out is a good fun!

Family firepit to midnight astro shoot.
Emma and Bow had gone to bed.
I stayed out with the Sony, 35mm f1.4 lens and the tripod hoping the sky would stay clear long enough to try a bit of astro.
Not perfect, but is nice to get something half decent straight from the garden.
Slowly learning. Still messing up but still loving it.

Took apart a Voigtländer Brilliant from 1941.
Didn’t expect much. Got jammed gears, mystery levers, and a date scratched behind the mirror from the middle of WWII.
Turns out it still works... mostly.
Bulb mode sulks. Frame counter’s useless. But the shutter ticks and the glass is clean enough that Bow tried to pinch-zoom the viewfinder.

Just loaded a roll of 120 into this beauty, a Zeiss Ikon folder from way back when.
Wound it on, lined up frame 1 in the red window, took the shot…
Wound on again… and again…

Now I’m on frame 3…

Turns out these old cameras don’t stop you from overshooting! You’ve got to watch that little red window like your life depends on it.
Lesson learned. Frame 2 was sacrificed to the photography gods.

Two completely different shoots this week, one roll of black & white film on the canal, and about 300 digital shots up Stanage Edge with Captain Bow leading the way.
Turns out simplicity and chaos both have their place in photography.

Took the Sony and Captain Bow out to Stanage Edge in the Peak District.
Her backpack had snacks and unicorns. Mine had a 20mm prime and wildly misplaced faith in my knees.
The ground was lava, the rocks were safe zones, and we both had cereal bars and bananas for survival.
She jumped, I crouched. She ran, I wheezed.
300 photos later, 25 made the cut.
I’m calling that a win, especially since I didn’t fall off anything!

Used up the last few frames of Ilford XP2 on a quick walk through Loughborough with the ST701.
Town centre was doing its usual thing, Union flags, scaffolding, market stalls half up, traffic doing traffic things etc etc.
Couple of solid shots of the Odeon and clocktower, and I quite like use of teh framing with the market stands.
XP2 definitely gives everything that gritty look.

Took the ST701 out on a lunchtime walk around the canal near work, loaded with Ilford XP2 black and white.
Nothing quite like using a 50-year-old manual camera to make a lunch break feel like a full on photography mission.
Swans were cooperative. Ducks less so.
Boats, bridges, graffiti, and at least three trolleys in various stages of decay, Loughborough’s finest canal life on display.
XP2 gives everything that slightly gritty, timeless feel. You could tell someone this was shot in 1983 and they’d believe you.
To be fair, so would I.

Took the Fujica ST701 out to the festival, loaded with the black and white Ilford XP2.
Obviously what every busy event needs is manual focus and no idea if your exposure’s right.

Harry got the close-up treatment that turned out fairly sharp, all things considered. The rest? Crowds, tents, light poles, and plenty of classic black and white grain.

Im finding that the XP2 always gives it that retro look. A bit gritty and a bit unpredictable, which is half the fun!

Took the Sony 24-240mm out at Jāņi, not just for the impromptu fireworks.
Next day, ended up tracking a red kite circling overhead while most people were heading for food or shade.

Someone asked if I was a "twitcher" (obviously i'm not) I told them I’d take a photo of a paper plane if it helped me practise focus tracking!
Seemed fair.

Worked the Jāņi Festival this year so didn’t have the main kit with me, but I did bring the new Osmo Pocket 3 to try out.
Between fire, fireworks, and flower crowns, it ended up being a pretty decent test.

Crowds were full of energy, the music was non-stop, and the bonfire was doing its job!
Fireworks over the treetops were a nice touch too, caught a few frames with the iPhone before the smoke took over.

Not bad for a midsummer evening where I was mostly meant to be working.

Swapped out the lens this week, got the Prinzflex 80–200mm f/4.5–5.6 on the Fujica ST701, just to see what it can do.
Loaded up with Ilford XP2 Super 400 (yep, the black and white stuff you can develop in C41 like colour film).
Should be an interesting combo with telephoto reach, vintage glass, and monochrome moods.
No clue what to expect, but that’s half the fun.

Was actually working at this Jāņi festival (Latvian midsummer) but couldn’t not grab a shot of this unit of a bonfire.

Didn’t have the Sony on me (typical), so this is a quick snap on the iPhone while trying not to look like I’d abandoned my job.
People dancing, singing, some kind of intense fern-based ritual kicking off, all while the fire tried to melt the horizon.

Low light, no tripod, questionable focus… but still, not bad for a work night.
